when-to-install-christmas-lighting

While some families have distinct traditions surrounding putting up a tree or outside decorations around their home at specific times, many do not.  So the question we get over and over again in the early fall is ‘when should I put up my Christmas lights?’

And the answer we always give is: it depends.  Depends on what? The answer can vary but here are the things you should consider:

  1. HOA rules: if you live in a community governed by an HOA, there are likely rules and restrictions regarding exterior holiday decorations. Typically they will dictate that no decorations go up before a certain start date in October or early November, depending on the community.  They also often set a date in January by which all decorations must be removed, which is good to keep in mind.

  2. Your holiday plans: if you’re planning a big holiday party for the office or friends, you’ll want to get the Christmas lights installed at least a week prior. The reason for this is to protect against any inclement weather or unforeseen scheduling issues that could delay the installation.  You will also want to take into consideration if you’re planning on traveling at all during the season – if so you may want to schedule an earlier commercial lighting installation so that you have time to enjoy the Christmas lights.

  3. Your budget: the Christmas season flies by and most holiday lighting installation companies are slammed from early November to early December.  During this time, few holiday light installation companies will offer any discounts. If convenience and timing are more important to you, this is the most popular time to have Christmas lights installed. If you’re looking to reduce your price, try to schedule off-peak, in October or mid-December.

  4. Your holiday spirit!  Christmas lights are meant to beautify your home and increase your enjoyment during the holiday season.  So whenever you decide to get your holiday lights installed, make sure you enjoy them!
