Hi I’m Brandon with All-Clean SoftWash.
Today I want to answer the question – what are the most common risks when cleaning gutters?
Cleaning gutters is a very dangerous job, even for professionals – nearly 40% of all deaths that occur in construction-related trades are from falls. Because of this, OSHA requires anyone working on a roof to harness up and tie off to a rated anchor point! We frequently work at heights of 20-30’ high, hunched over just inches away from the edge of the roof. However, all our technicians are certified to install safety anchors, and we harness up on every roof, no matter how tall or short.
Another common risk is dealing with diseases, bacteria that live inside the stagnant sludge in your gutters. As someone who has cleaned thousands of gutters – I can tell you about the dead animals, animal feces, and the horrific smell that gutter debris has. There’s nothing worse than getting splashback in your face while cleaning them out – so goggles and masks are a must!
Sharp metal, rusty nails something you’ll regularly encounter while cleaning gutters. Gutters are fabricated with sheet metal, and frequently there are sharp pieces of sheet metal protruding out that will cut straight through your gloves. We’ve even found hypodermic needles inside of gutters while cleaning them out – although that is pretty rare. But when you gather a few professional gutter cleaners and start to share horror stories of the random items we have found inside of gutters – it’s not as rare as you might think!
